OneVoice Presentation About the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Bissan Al Helu and Shlomi Haar are instrumental parts of the OneVoice Movement, a non-partisan international grassroots movement of Israeli and Palestinian activists. They represent hundreds of OneVoice Israeli and Palestinian youth activists who are working within their communities to spread the message of moderation, non-violence and peaceful conflict resolution. The OneVoice Movement is a mainstream grassroots movement with over 600,000 signatories in roughly equal numbers both in Israel and in Palestine, and 1,800 highly-trained youth leaders. It aims to amplify the voice of moderates who wish for peace and prosperity, empowering them to demand accountability from elected representatives and work toward a two-state solution guaranteeing an end to occupation and violence, and a viable, independent Palestinian state at peace with Israel. HaMakom Yenacheim - It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Miki Schwartz z''l, father of Anne Marx, father-in-law to Michael, and grandfather of Joshua and Eitan.

Miki died early this morning in his sleep with his entire family at his side. After more than a decade of fighting cancer and decades of fighting everything bad that came his way including the Nazis, he continued fighting bravely until the end.

Miki's extended family and community will gather for a funeral on Thursday, April 8th, at 11 a.m. at El Camino Memorial Park (5600 Carroll Canyon Rd.), San Diego, 92121. Shiva will immediately follow at Anne's mother Betty's home (5095 Mt. La Platta Dr., San Diego, 92117). Shiva will also continue at her house in the evenings on Thursday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

There may be Berkeley gatherings late next week, and we will share any information that becomes available.

HaMakom Yenacheim - It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Sylvia Radwin, Tzivia bat Moshe v'Leah z''l, grandmother of David Radwin and great-grandmother of Ruth, Ori, and Matan Radwin. Sylvia passed away Tuesday, March 30 in West Palm Beach, Florida. The funeral was in New York on Friday, April 2. Shiva, which was postponed by Pesach, is being observed by David's uncle and grandfather in south Florida. May her memory be for a blessing.

We will use the 49 days of the Omer period to frame our own journeys of self discovery and personal realization. By exploring and discussing the Sephiot, the mystical divine attributes that are a focus of the counting of the Omer, we will both encounter new understandings of God and also our own inner powers. This class does not assume any background in Kabbalah or Hebrew reading and will include text study, compassionate listening, journal writing, and exploring how the Omer period and the Jewish community can be powerful tools in becoming the people we want to become.

In Hunting Eichmann: How a Band of Survivors and a Young Spy Agency Chased Down the World's Most Notorious Nazi,New York Times best-selling author Neal Bascomb offers the first complete account of one of the most important, influential spy missions in history - the operation to catch Eichmann, architect of the mass murder of Europe's Jews, and bring him to justice .

We invite your submissions for "...and it was revealed: an evening of spoken word, a celebration of epiphanies and fervent fruition" as Jewish performance artists share their original spoken word pieces, stories, songs and poetry. The event, part of a series of spoken word happenings (see the recent J article - http://bit.ly/berkeleyword), will be held on Thursday, May 6 at 7:30 pm at Congregation Beth Israel in Berkeley. If selected, performers agree to participate in a one hour "playshop" evening in April. (The playshop will provide a supportive environment for receiving feedback on performance and content.) Jewish content is optional, however, profanity and explicit language and divisive political content would not be appropriate for this event. Wrestling with Reconciliation: Jews, Muslims, and Sacred Texts

Co-taught by a Muslim and Jewish co-educator team, this course focuses on the themes of conflict, reconciliation, and inter-communal dialogue. Through inter-textual analyses, students will learn about similarities and differences between and within Judaism and Islam. Some of the Biblical and Qur'anic sacred narratives we will examine look at Abraham, Isaac, Ishmael, Hagar, Sarah, Joseph, and more.

MAY17: 7:30-9:00: The Ten Dvarim ("Commandments"): the Foundation of Jewish Law, taught by Nitzhia Shaked
Are the Ten Dvarim (literally utterances, or "commandments") just ten mitzvot among the 613 (or more) in the Torah? Clearly not, but then what are they? Are they more fundamental than the other imperatives? If so, why aren't they read with the Shma, as part of daily prayer? They may seem quite familiar, but what do they really mean? We begin by considering the nature and importance of the Ten Dvarim, taken together, as the foundation of Jewish Law. Our focus then shifts to an in-depth text study of the separate Dvarim in Exodus and Deuteronomy, analyzing some challenging rabbinic and modern ideas on the content of each.

As we all contemplate the journey from slavery to freedom this Passover, we'd like to ask you to take a minute to think deeply about our local community. The community in which we work, live and pray suffers from so many of the plagues of our modern times . What are the plagues that your family might identify? How do you feel affected by those issues? In order to connect through our shared experiences, and think about how we might draw on our Jewish values in order to have an impact in our community, we are asking for your
participation and input on this question: What vision of Berkeley would you like to put forth that would allow you and your family, or our congregation, to feel a greater sense of justice, wholeness, or real community? Please take some time to explore this and e-mail social action (socialaction@netivotshalom.org) to share any thoughts you'd like us to hear. We are partnering with our local churches to explore this question, with the hope that common themes may lead to some community-building and action steps to take together.

April 18, 2010 10:00 AM - Noon: In celebration of Israel's 62nd birthday Rabbi Hanan Alexander will discuss "Israel and its Critics: Toward a Mature Zionism." This talk will focus on Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. We will discuss the fundamental right of Jews to define themselves as a national culture, with its own national language, and sovereign in its own land, provided that the basic rights of all citizens are recognized under its sovereignty. We will also consider tensions between the preference that the State of Israel shows to Jews on the one hand and the possibility of granting equal rights to all citizens on the other, including Arab or Palestinian Israelis. Rabbi Alexander is Richard and Rhoda Goldman Visiting Professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California and Professor of Philosophy of Education at the University of Haifa where he heads the Center for Jewish Education. Refreshments will be available at 9:45, the talk will start promptly at 10:00.

Through an 8 part class, we will use the 49 days of the Omer period to frame our own journeys of self discovery and personal realization. By exploring and discussing the Sephiot, the mystical divine attributes that are a focus of the counting of the Omer, we will both encounter new understandings of God and also our own inner powers. This class does not assume any background in Kabbalah or Hebrew reading and will include text study, compassionate listening, journal writing, and exploring how the Omer period and the Jewish community can be powerful tools in becoming the people we want to become.

We invite your submissions for "...and it was revealed: an evening of spoken word, a celebration of epiphanies and fervent fruition" as Jewish performance artists share their original spoken word pieces, stories, songs and poetry. The event, part of a series of spoken word happenings (see the recent J article - http://bit.ly/berkeleyword), will be held on Thursday, May 6 at 7:30 pm at Congregation Beth Israel in Berkeley. If selected, performers agree to participate in a one hour "playshop" evening in April. (The playshop will provide a supportive environment for receiving feedback on performance and content.) Jewish content is optional, however, profanity and explicit language and divisive political content would not be appropriate for this event. April 18, 2010 10:00 AM - Noon: In celebration of Israel's 62nd birthday Rabbi Hanan Alexander will discuss "Israel and its Critics: Toward a Mature Zionism" This talk will focus on Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. We will discuss the fundamental right of Jews to define themselves as a national culture, with its own national language, and sovereign in its own land, provided that the basic rights of all citizens are recognized under its sovereignty. We will also consider tensions between the preference that the State of Israel shows to Jews on the one hand and the possibility of granting equal rights to all citizens on the other, including Arab or Palestinian Israelis. Rabbi Alexander is Richard and Rhoda Goldman Visiting Professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California and Professor of Philosophy of Education at the University of Haifa where he heads the Center for Jewish Education. Refreshments will be available at 9:45, the talk will start promptly at 10:00.

We tell of God's greatness from generation to generation. The event, part of a series of spoken word happenings (see the recent J article - http://bit.ly/berkeleyword), will be held on Thursday, May 6 at 7:30 pm at Congregation Beth Israel in Berkeley. If selected, performers agree to participate in a one hour "playshop" evening in April. (The playshop will provide a supportive environment for receiving feedback on performance and content.) Jewish content is optional, however, profanity and explicit language and divisive political content would not be appropriate for this event. New Adult Learning Class with Rabbi Shalom Bochner -

The 7 weeks of the Omer between the second day of Passover and Shavuot Through an 8-part class, we will use the 49 days of the Omer period to frame our own journeys of self-discovery and personal realization.　 This class does not assume any background in Kabbalah or Hebrew reading and will include text study, compassionate listening, journal writing, and exploring how the Omer period and the Jewish community can be powerful tools in becoming the people we want to become. We begin by considering the nature and importance of the Ten Dvarim ("Commandments"), taken together, as the foundation of Jewish Law. Our focus then shifts to an in-depth text study of the separate Dvarim in Exodus and Deuteronomy, analyzing some challenging rabbinic and modern ideas on the content of each. Rosenheimer Campership Application - It's that time of year again - scholarships to Jewish Summer Camp through the Rosenheimer Camp Fund are now available to children of Netivot Shalom members. This Summer: Ramah Outdoor Adventure! This summer, the National Ramah Commission is opening a one of a kind Jewish outdoor adventure camp in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains called Ramah Outdoor Adventure (www.ramahoutdoors.org). This camp will combine 60+ years of Ramah camping experience with the best of outdoor adventure activities including horseback riding, climbing and rafting. Students from throughout the United States who are entering grades 6-10 in September 2010 (and are not currently enrolled in a Ramah camp) are invited to apply to become part of the opening cohort of campers. The camp is located 90 miles from Denver in Pike National Forest on the 360 acre Ramah in the Rockies ranch! During its inaugural summer, Ramah Outdoor Adventure will be offering 1, 2 & 4-week options.

A Note from Rabbi Creditor: Our Family Needs Us

Dear Chevreh,

Netivot Shalom has taken important steps throughout its history to affirm our unconditional familial relationship with Israel.

From the weekly prayers for the State of Israel, the Israeli Defense Forces (Tzahal), and for the release of Gilad Shalit to the presence of Israel and American flags in the library overlooking the sanctuary; from V'Zot Yisrael's Israeli cultural programming to their work to bring Consul General Akiva Tor to CNS this past Sunday; from past CNS Israel trips, to our participation in the recent Masorti Leadership Mission, to the next shul trip to Israel being planned for Summer 2011 - Israel is in our collective soul, and we have therefore had a very hard week.

As you may have heard, early yesterday morning, the UC Berkeley ASUC Student Senate passed a bill calling upon the UC Berkeley administration and the UC Regents to divest from companies due to their business relationship with the Israeli government. We stand with and in support of our sister organization, Berkeley Hillel, who are working with student leaders to have this bill rescinded. The official Hillel statement can be found on the Berkeley Hillel website (pages.berkeleyhillel.org).

Netivot Shalom especially stands with the rabbinic leadership of Berkeley Hillel, Rabbi Adam Naftalin-Kelman (Executive Director) and Rabbi Dorothy Richman (Rabbi In Residence), both beloved members of our shul.

If you would like to help Berkeley Hillel respond to the Student Senate bill, please be in contact with UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau (chancellor@berkeley.edu), University of California President Mark G. Yudof (president@ucop.edu), and the Associated Students of the University of California elected representatives of the UC Berkeley student body (bit.ly/auu3mz).

This awful bill comes in the aftermath of two other problematic events in Israel that have galvanized a fiery diaspora response.

One was the "Rotem Bill", introduced in the Israeli Knesset which proposed that anyone converting to Judaism in Israel would not be automatically eligible for citizenship through the Law of Return. This provision would also be applied retroactively, stripping any converts of their citizenship. Read the Forward's account of the impact American Jewry had on the bill's being stopped. (An analysis of the proposed bill by Masorti Rabbi Reuven Hammer is here: bit.ly/9ULaWD.)

The other traumatic event occurred Tuesday morning, when Women of the Wall gathered in the women's section of the Kotel for their monthly davening. This time, a few Charedi men threw chairs over the mechitza (divider) at the women's group. And, for me, this time was even more awful. As can be seen on the YouTube video of it happening, my sister was in that group that morning. They are all physically fine. Our people's soul is not fine. Mine is not either.

Of course, we've also been paying close attention to the recent tensions that arose when Vice President Biden visited Israel, only to be confronted with an Israeli decision to build in Ramat Shlomo, a contested area close to Jerusalem. As an email from Seymour Kessler, CNS member and cochair of Bridges to Israel-Berkeley, put it in an urgent email this week: "Whether or not you are a J-Streetnik, AIPACer or neither, you need to be aware that the discourse in U.S.-Israel relations has hit a disturbingly new low." There are important steps Israel must take, with the American Jewish community's needed support and critique, to strengthen itself in the community of nations and in the global Jewish community.

Chevreh, I write you this extended email in the hopes that you will be at least as engaged as you have been. We are a shul with many strong opinions about everything. But the framework for this particular conversation is that we labor for the body and the soul of Israel. A group under the leadership of Rom Rosenblum is starting its work to help create a Bay Area network of Masorti supporters to strengthen the Masorti (Conservative) Movement in Israel, which is dedicated to pluralism and progressive social politics.

Our family needs us. May we all feel the need to respond so that tomorrow we can transform hatred and mistrust into Ahavat Chinam, free-flowing love. May Israel, her neighbors, and the world know peace one day soon.

Mid-Year Finance Report from

Congregation Netivot Shalom

Dear Members,

The Board and I thought it would be helpful to give a mid year report on our financial status. The basic message is: We are doing okay in the short term, but we have long term challenges that we are addressing.

Now for some of the more specific details (click on the link below to view the actual numbers):

We are still on track to bring in a budget that is balanced.

Although our fundraising line in the Operating Budget seems to often (always?) fall short, in fact we are doing quite well if one looks at the overall picture. Our congregants are currently contributing about $225,000 per year above and beyond dues. This includes not only the fundraising in the Operating Budget but also the contributions via the various capital campaigns and the Critical Appeal.

The combination of Capital Campaign contributions and the Critical Appeal funds are enough to keep the Building Fund nearly constant. This gives us badly needed time to deal with the long term financial issues, the primary one of which is the renegotiation of the mortgage.

The extension of the second mortgage is nearly complete. An encouraging outcome of this effort was the number of congregants who stepped forward and offered to pick up the parts of the loan that needed to be repaid.

We have begun discussions with Fremont Bank on ways to make our monthly mortgage payment less of a burden on our operating budget.

The current economic climate has forced us to put a hold on the Capital Campaign but as things improve we will restart it.

The Honorable Mr. Akiva Tor, Consul General of Israel for the Pacific Northwest region will speak about "Diversity, Innovation and Politics in Israel Today". Mr. Tor has served as World Jewish Affairs Adviser to the President of Israel, as Director of the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, as Deputy Director for Palestinian Affairs in the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as the Press and Information Attache in the Israeli Embassy in The Hague. He is a graduate of the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government, holds an MA degree from Hebrew University in Jewish political thought and a BA from Columbia University in general philosophy. Mr. Tor has written and lectured extensively on Jewish values in the foreign policy of Israel and on ethical considerations in international relations. He served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces and is an infantry captain in the IDF reserves.
